TOP 10 LAZY DOG BREEDS
Everyone has a little couch potato in them from time to time. There are even some dog breeds that are notoriously known for being comprised of the laziest dogs to own. While all dogs (even lazy ones) need at least some exercise, there are also a handful of breeds that prefer to spend a majority of thier quality time snoozing rather than going for long walks in the park.
There are some perks to owning a dog that loves to laze. They’re great for apartments and are likely the perfect companion to cuddle up on the couch after a long day. With their own unique characteristics, these low-key dogs are perfect for anyone seeking a dog to match their slothful lifestyle.
Low Energy Dog Breeds
Imagine looking forward to coming home after a long day and having the perfect couch buddy anxiously awaiting you for snuggles and pets. If you’re looking for a mellow dog that can kick it with you during your downtime, you may want to turn your attention to one of our favorite lazy dog breeds:
Basset Hound
Maybe it’s their stubby legs, their wrinkled-up brows, or their droopy ears, but when they aren’t hunting, these pups love nothing more than cuddling up alongside their family. They run with the pack, but after a moderate play session or walk, you can expect to find them settling down for a hearty nap.
Bullmastiffs
These 100-pound gentle giants are a lot of dog, with a lot of laziness! Spending most of the day napping is just how the bullmastiff loves to spend his day. They don’t suffer from anxieties when left alone for elongated periods of time, so leaving them to nap is hardly a worry.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
The King Charles spaniel might be the best of both worlds in terms of laze. They can be athletic and sporty, loving a romp around the beach, but were bred specifically to sit at the feet of royalty. They are excellent lap dogs for their obedience and moderate exercise needs. They are extremely adaptable, great with kids and other dogs, and are eager to please.
Chow Chow
Because they are so sensitive to heat, these adorable balls of fur are much more likely to stay in their bed or lounge anywhere as opposed to begging to go for a walk. Luckily, the breed is not a high-energy breed, requiring only moderate daily walks.
English Bulldog
Bulldogs are one of the gentlest breeds when shopping for your next furry friend. Their stocky build is proof that their cardio is often limited. They also totally live up to the reputational stereotype of being one of the laziest dog breeds! Don’t be surprised when you hear some of the loudest snores coming from their adorably smushed faces. While English bulldogs surprisingly are known to love skateboarding, they also love nothing more than a good snooze session.
Great Dane
The dog that loves to sleep. It may surprise you, but though mighty in size, Great Danes love to sleep. It’s probably best these dogs are on the lazier side, as no one wants a 200-pound pup energetically running around the tight corners of your home. Of course, in their teen years they will likely have exuberant spurts of energy, but in their adult years, moderate daily walks are enough for these loveable giants. That won’t stop them from wanting to nuzzle alongside you when catching up on your favorite television shows.
Greyhound
Sleeping approximately 18 hours each day, greyhounds make the cut for the laziest dogs of all. This may surprise you, as many know the breed for racing 40+ miles on racetracks. But the gentle breed easily and quickly adapts to a lifestyle of lounging. They are also sensitive to cold weather. When you do take your greyhound out for a walk and your climate is known to get on the chilly side, be sure to adorn them with a coat!
Newfoundland
Unfortunately for them, this breed requires regular exercise to stay healthy. However, they would much prefer to lounge around the yard or go for a leisurely swim rather than a hike. Newfoundlands require extra encouragement, love, and strength to get these 100-pound dogs moving!
Saint Bernard
If you had a big fluffy coat as these beauties do, it’s likely you’ll want to be 24/7 lazy too! Saint Bernard’s are the perfect companion for those who don’t mind having a solid snuggle buddy as they love hanging out with the humans! Affectionately referred to as the “nanny dog”, they’ll choose hanging around with their owners over the opportunity to play fetch.
Shih Tzu
If you hate exercise, then Shih Tzus are the dog for you! They’re loyal, outgoing, and affectionate, but if you plan on taking them on an elongated walk, chances are you’ll be carrying them before the end of your journey. Overflowing with love, these pups have no qualms with cuddling and loving up on their owners.
